Summary: | Since the advent of CT scan, the investigation of intracranial lesions has been easy and accurate. With the improvement of diagnostic ability, subdural fluid collection (SFC) has also been detected frequently after head injuries and neurosurgical operations. The clinical symptoms caused by SFC are mild in most patients and most cases of SFC disappear spontaneously as shown by repeated CT scan. Therefore the indications for surgical treatment of SFC should be limited. CT scan has newly revealed that some cases of SFC develop to chronic subdural hematoma (CSH). The clinical significance of SFC is that it can be a precursor of CSH. The factors related to development of CSH from SFC are not sufficiently known. Further studies are thus needed to clarify these factors and moreover to prevent progression to CSH from SFC. |
