Summary:The apprentices acquire a whole set of values, a poetics of authority and how to subvert it, through this discipline: from how to be courteous to their high-status customers while mocking them behind their backs, to how to appear bored, to feign indifference, so better to "steal" the techniques of a jealous master and by doing so, to show themselves to be worthy adversaries and perhaps worthy future partners (note the similarity here to the sheep thieves of Glendi who "steal to make friends").
