Summary:Hernioplasty with the use of a prosthesis for adult inguinal hernia is common in Japan but reports on long-term quality of life (QOL) after such surgery are few. We studied clinical symptoms due to inflammation or tissue fibrosis involving a prosthesis. We sent a questionnaire to adults undergoing inguinal hernia surgery at our department between January 1998 and November 2000, comparing the Perfix mesh plug® and the Prolene™ hernia system in those undergoing sutured hernia repair between January 1994 and September 1995. Postoperative symptoms, such as difficulty in urination or defecation, constipation, and narrowing of the stool were found to occur significantly more in patients receiving mesh plug hernioplasty. We concluded that clinical symptoms due to a prosthesis may appear after mesh plug hernioplasty in the long term.
