Summary: | A 66-year-old man diagnosed as having lung cancer had sigmoid colon cancer synchronously. He underwent F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) for preoperative assessment of clinical staging of lung cancer. FDG-PET showed strong accumulation (standardrized uptake value (SUV)•max6.5) in the left lung field corresponding to the segment 6. Another strong accumulation (SUV: max5.6) was seen in the left lower abdomen. Accordingly the diagnosis of sigmoid colon cancer was made. Curative resection was performed for each lesion. Four months have elapsed after the operations and there is no evidence of recurrence. It has been reported that, FDG-PET gives important information as to 1) screening of other asymptomatic malignancy, 2) operative indication and decision of proper procedure, 3) efficacy of radio chemotherapy, and 4) diagnosis and treatment of postoperative recurrence in the management of malignant diseases. It is thought that generalization of PET will permit strict selection for local treatment and avoidance of unnecessary surgery, and further organization of current diagnostic methods. |
