Summary:In PEFCs (Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells), the gas diffusion layer (GDL) is one of the largest cost factors among the components. In order to reduce manufacturing cost, GDLs fabricated using a coating of carbon fiber dispersion have been developed. The coating dispersion is composed of carbon fibers with a diameter of 11 mm, ionomer, and solvents. After coating the slurry, the carbon fiber layer was dried and hot-pressed before using it as a cathode GDL. The performance of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) employing the dispersion-cast GDL was equal to that using a conventional GDL.
