Summary:Giving access to an electronic collection of printed books, pictures and audiovisual materials is one of the main projects of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Begun in 1990, the digitizing program is based on the concept of an encyclopedic collection of works in the sciences, french literature and history. Preliminary studies indicate that storage in the graphic format is the most cost efficient option for the library. Access to the digital collection is planned for 1997 through the new integrated information system.
