Summary:A new synergy between fundamental classes of biomolecules is reported by Clemens Richert et al. in their Research Article (e202307591). Prolinyl nucleotides, such as the one shown in the upper right‐hand corner of the image, act as building blocks in the enzyme‐free genetic copying of RNA. The cyclic amino acid is the leaving group when new phosphodiesters are formed on the RNA template, as shown in the growing duplex in the center. That a proteinogenic amino acid can replace the pyrophosphate of polymerase‐driven replication processes of extant biology helps to fill a gap in our understanding of the molecular origin of life.
