Summary: | A 61-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of vomiting and abdominal pain in December 2003. She had previous histories of a puncture wound to the abdomen at 31 years of age and ventral incisional hernia on two occasions at 36 and 43 years of age. She also had a 10-year history of suffering from abdominal distension off and on. She was admitted with a suspected diagnosis of ileus due to ventral incisional hernia, based on the clinical and radiographic findings. Surgery was performed, because the ileus did not improve with conservative management. There were three hernia orifices with the diameter of 8, 4, and 3cm, resectively. The hernia contents consisted mainly of intestinal loops, however, no necrosis of the intestine was recognized. The ileus appeared to have been caused by adhesion of the intestinal loops. We closed the hernia orifices using the PROLENE Hernia System® (PHS) and covered the entire area with the PROLENE Mesh®, because her abdominal wall was weak over a wide area. The postoperative progress of the patient was good. We report this case together with a review of the literature. |
