Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a combination of ordinary respiratory exercises and respiratory muscle strengthening exercises for the patients receiving abdominal surgery. 1)Patients who had performed muscle strengthening exercise before surgery showed a greater difference in abdominal circumference between the maximum expiration and inspiration, a bigger rising power of abdominal muscle, and better respiratory muscle durability, exhibiting better post-operative progress. 2)The respiratory muscle durability was found to be most improved by a combination of the exercises. 3)Patients who had performed exercises showed shorter required time for expectorating by themselves and leaving from the bed compared with controls. 4)Although results obtained suggest the effectiveness of a combination of the exercises for the recovery of respiratory function, further investigation on intensity and frequency of the exercise would be necessary.
