Summary: | Veneers with different thickness and moisture content were bonded with phenol formallehyde resin containing ammonium borate octahydrate or bromo-phenol resin at chemical retention of 200g/m2. The cross section of the two layered LVL specimens were analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in order to evaluate the distribution of the fire retardant chemicals along the glue line. Bromine was assumed to spread in wood cells from the glue lines during pressing, which was influenced by the initial moisture content hf veneers. Broader distribution of the chemicals was detected in the specimens with higher moisture content than oven-dried ones. The penetration of resin, which was affected by the initial moisture content and thickness of veneers, influenced the fire retardancy and hickness swelling properties. |
