Summary:We currently developed a continuous, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring system based on arterial tonometry. We evaluated accuracy, reliability and clinical acceptance of the system in 50 adults patients undergoing surgical procedures who required direct arterial blood pressure monitor during anesthesia and surgery. The invasive blood pressure (IBP) was measured on either the right or left radial artery using a Gould P23XL calibrated transducer, while tonometry blood pressure (CBP) monitor was made on the radial artery of the other side. Waveforms of CBP were smilar to those of IBP with identical waveform changes. Regression analysis of 1423 paired of CBP and IBP values showed good correlation for both systolic pressure (r=0.97) and diastolic pressure (r=0.05). We confirmed that positioning of miniature transducers was appropriate by an automatic sensor positioning system, and that the size of transducers was small enough to operate over the radial artery in adult patients. Although not all technical problems were solved, this system was potentially a useful method to monitor blood pressure on the wrist in a continuous and non-invasive fashion.
