Summary:The involvement of the breast by sarcoidosis is uncommon. Most of these lesions were accidentally found in the courses of the treatment of systemic sarcoidosis. We experienced a rare case of mammary sarcoid lesion. A 65-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of a right breast mass. On physical examination, a hard mass with the diameter of 1.0 cm and irregular surface was palpated in the right outer part of the breast. It was associated with slight dimple. Mammography showed an 1.3×1.3 cm faint tumor shadow with calcification. Needle aspiration cytology disclosed a mass of atypical cells. Malignant breast tumor was suspected from these findings. In August 1989, a partial mastectomy with lymph nodes dissection was conducted under the diagnosis of right breast cancer. Histological examination of the resected specimen revealed typical findings of sarcoid granuloma. As of 12 years after the operation, on a chest X-ray film, abdominal CT scan, serum ACE level and physical findings, no sarcoid lesions have been detected in this patient. We report this rare case of mammary sarcoid with a review of the literature.
