Summary:This paper describes the theory of the dependence of the tribological characteristics of the material (coefficient of friction and wear) and the mechanical properties of the material (Poisson's ratio and modulus of elasticity). A special focus is placed on the characteristics of composite materials which are difficult to predict by mechanical and tribological characteristics. Relationship between effective values of friction coefficient and wear and modulus of elasticity is given for composites. Mori-Tanaka homogenization method is applied in calculation of modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio, and their dependencies, for composites with spherical particles.
