Summary:Mixed lithium niobates-tantalates LiNb 1−x Ta x O 3 (LN-LT) with different Nb/Ta ratio have been prepared using two-stage procedure: dry milling at 600 rpm and calcination at 700 °C. XRD data indicate formation of low crystalline intermediate products at the stage of ball-milling procedure. Milled intermediates have a band gap in the range of 3.00–3.16 eV and, as a result, high photocatalytic activity in the process of safranin T degradation under visible irradiation. Hydrothermal treatment of milled intermediates slightly increases the activity due to an increase in the specific surface area. The intermediates doped with praseodymium have maximum activity since their band gap is minimum. Highly crystalline calcined niobates-tantalates have broader band gap and much lower activity.
