Summary:The inhibition of horseradish peroxidase activity by N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, the active ingredient of the Roundup herbicide (glyphosate), which is the most common herbicide in agricultural practice in the world, was investigated. It has been shown that N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine inhibited the activity of peroxidase from horseradish roots by a competitive type, K i = 0.1004 mM. Michaelis constant was K m = 1.776 mM and the half-maximal inhibitory concentration was I 50 = 0.302 mM. The data we obtained indicated that N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine can block the work of the antioxidant systems and can cause the accumulation of free radicals in warm-blooded organisms, which is an addition to the available literature data on biological targets of Roundup.
