Summary:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) published postoperative knee replacement infection rates ranging from 0.68% to 1.60% from 2006-2008 depending on patient risk. Reported postoperative hip replacement infection rates ranged from 0.67% to 2.4%. Periprosthetic joint infection is a complication of total joint replacement resulting in significant morbidity, pain, loss of function, potential removal of the prosthesis, and an increased cost to hospitals.
