A comparative study of trace enrichment of chlorophenols in water by extraction with C6 and C8 alkanes and by C18 reversed-phase adsorption

N-hexane, iso-octane and octadecyl carbon (C18) reversed-phase adsorption were compared for the accumulation of 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol from aqueous solutions. All three procedures could efficie...

Summary:N-hexane, iso-octane and octadecyl carbon (C18) reversed-phase adsorption were compared for the accumulation of 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol from aqueous solutions. All three procedures could efficiently enrich traces of chlorophenols, the choice of procedure depending on the required analytical sensitivity. Extraction procedures could be applied to concentrations of chlorophenols at or above 1 ug per litre. However, the C18 reversed-phase adsorption procedure achieved a detection limit of 10 ng per litre and was recommended for chlorophenol determinations in surface, ground and drinking waters.
