Summary:Starved granulocytes release proteins into the surrounding medium in the absence of any exogenous stimulus. In order to study the relationship between the metabolic state and the protein release the authors examined the influence of glucose and L-ascorbic acid. Whereas glucose inhibits in part the release of proteins, L-ascorbic acid has little effect. The release occurs during the first hour of the incubation and it does not result from a thermal shock. The transference of the cells to a new medium after one hour of incubation brings about another release of proteins. The results of protein release are compared to those obtained with organs or other cells.
