The usability of arthroscopic laser surgery

We have been performing arthroscopic surgery using a Ho: YAG laser (wavelength: 2, 100nm; pulsed laser) since January 1992. Summary:We have been performing arthroscopic surgery using a Ho: YAG laser (wavelength: 2, 100nm; pulsed laser) since January 1992. Surgery has consisted of 29 cases of meniscectomy, 10 cases of resection of the plica, 5 cases of synovectomy, and 5 other cases. We compared short-term postoperative results in the 19 cases in which meniscectomy was performed for meniscus injury uncomplicated by ligamentous injury and the 10 cases of resection of the plica with 18 cases and 12 cases, respectively, in which surgery was performed without using the laser. The results confirmed that the laser permits early functional recovery. Laser arthroscopic surgery with Ho:YAG was confirmed following advantages; 1. Ablation of tissues was possible under saline solution. 2. During tissue cutting, hemostasis could be done. 3. In narrow space, it was easy to operate.
