Summary:The paper gives an outline of newly developed hyperthermia systems whose detailed descriptions would be given by accompanying three papers. The research and development program aiming at the development of the next generation equipments for hyperthemia was organized by Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). The first objective of the project is to actualize a heating equipment which is applicable to not only regional hyperthermia but also local hyperthermia even if the tumor was deepseated one. Development of two-dimensional noninvasive temperature monitoring technique is the second objective. The third objective is to realize a computer system to support planning of the hyperthermic treatment which is the most suitable for each patient. Two systems using ultrasounds or electromagnetic waves were developed and they are now being tested for their clinical applications.
