Summary: | This article examines the reasons the kingdom of Aceh under Sultan Iskandar Thani failed to assist the Governor-General Antonio van Diemen to conquer Melaka despite repeated appeals. The failure seems strange when evidence shows that Iskandar Thani was favourably disposed to do so and the Acehnese had sought to be rid of the Portuguese since 1537. Contrary to the belief that Iskandar Thani was merely engaged in delaying tactics rather than assisting the Dutch, it is demonstrated here that there were compelling reasons that led to the abortive Aceh-VOC alliance to conquer Melaka. |
