Summary:Alumina-pellets, treated in a Verneuil apparatus, were used to investigate the crystallization process near the melting point. By special temperature programs primary nucleation could be separated from competitive growth. For both processes the distribution function of the orientations of the main crystallographic axis is established. According to this, the nucleation can be called isotropic, while the competitive growth tends to special orientations.
