Summary:A mercury arc discharge exposed to the external magnetic field was investigated as an example of the dynamic nonlinear system. The transitions between various metastable regimes of the arc oscillations reflected in the records of the arc voltage and motion were studied by means of the fast Fourier transform, putting the stress on the phases relating to important lines in the spectra. The results prove a close correlation between the observed transitions and the changes in phase angles related to various lines in the spectrum and their combinations. The reasons for the nonlinear system behaviour and transitions are sought in the various conditions for the arc oscillations in different parts of the column and nonequilibrium between the power input and heat transport depending on a particular oscillation regime.
