More Information
Summary:Daily oral administration of 4 to 20g of aluminum hydroxide relieved moderate or mild pruritus in 5 of 8 patients with liver disease within one to three weeks. Drug dosage or duration of treatment did not relate to changes in pruritus. The severity of pruritus did not correlate with serum bile acid levels. By the treatment, serum bile acid levels over 50μM tended to be decreased, amd serum bile acid leVels after cerulein administration were less elevated. Thus aluminum hydroxide may be applicable to the management of hepatic pruritus, probably through its bile-acid-binding property.
