Summary: | D-Penicillamine was administered to nine patients with chronic hepatitis and seven patients with liver cirrhosis for three to seven months. Relative small daily dosis of the drug (800mg) was employed in order to reduce adverse effects such as rash and fever. There was a marked clinical and biochemical improvement in four out of nine chronic hepatitis. Three of these four patients with chronic hepatitis had previously failed to improve with corticoids and/or immunosuppressive drugs. Histological improvement of the liver, including a decrease of cell infiltration and reduction of fibrosis, was observed in three patients with chronic hepatitis. No biochemical and histological improvement was demonstrated in nine patients with liver cirrhosis. |
