Laser Pulse Compression and Amplification by Stimulated Backward Raman Scattering of Ba(NO3)2 and CaCO3 Crystals

Summary:Pulse compressor and amplifier using stimulated backward Raman scattering (SRS) of barium nitrate and calcite crystals are studied experimentally. 15 times of compression and more than 50 % SRS reflectivity were obtained with a 350 ps Nd:YAG fundamental laser as pump. Generation of two consecutive (the main and the second) pulses was observed in the Raman generator. A method to suppress the second pulse in Raman generator and selective amplification of the main pulse in Raman amplifier are also studied experimentally.
