Summary:Fifteen cases of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss with severely declined speech discrimination scores, without CP angle tumors, were presented and discussed. Unlike so-called retrocochlear deafness with impaired speech intelligibility of both sides, these cases included both cochlear and retrocochlear findings according to the tests on recruitment phenomena and synthetic vowels. Many cases were diagnosed and treated as sudden deafness, but almost all cases showed the improvement of neither pure-tone sensitivity nor scores of speech discrimination tests. It was assumed that among cases of sudden deafness is there a group with poor prognosis, and that the speech discrimination score could be characteristic.
