Summary:In this article we explore the traces that the symbol of the donkey, which belongs to an old literary tradition, may have left in the two major works by Alemán and Cervantes. The analysis of the concept of “donkeyness” between positive “donkeyness” and negative “donkeyness” enables one to confront the two literary texts in a new way and testifies to the originality of two writings that find there the foundings of their modernity.
