Summary: | Conceptions of the body among the Suruí of Rondônia (Brazilian Amazon) do not appear so much as theories based on an opposition between “body” and “soul(s)”, “inside” and “outside”, etc., but rather as discourse that makes it possible to claim certain abilities in very specific contexts, faced with various categories of relations, for a varying duration. Thus, the faculties attributed to certain parts of the body (bone, blood, skin, ornaments) can be stable or unstable, permanent or renewable, shared in an egalitarian way with a group of relations or won against them. These various body components also tend to be evoked in very specific contexts and discourse. |
