Summary:The "Crystallization: Focus on Optimization Techniques, Soluble and Membrane Proteins" course organized by Naomi Chayen (Imperial College London) and Vivian Stojanoff (NSLS) took place at the National Synchrotron Light Source from June 6-8, 2005. Fifty-five researchers from the U.S. and abroad discussed and experienced hands-on the complexity of the protein-crystal growth process. This three-day course covered different aspects of the crystallization process from the most standard to the more advanced high throughput techniques. Several lectures introducing the subject and eight parallel practical sessions were held by experts in the field. Neer Asherie (Yeshiva University) discussed "Understanding the Protein Phase Behavior," Pat Loll (Drexel University) presented the "Membrane Proteins and Detergents," Marie Claude Marchand (Nextal Biotechnologies) discussed the "Vapor Diffusion Method and Optimization," and Gwen Nneji (Imperial College London) described "Non-standard Crystallization Techniques."
