Summary:Drink Wise, Age Well is multi-intervention, prevention-to-treatment programme designed to reduce alcohol-related harm in people aged 50 and over in the UK. The programme includes an intervention which involves trained workers discussing alcohol use with older adults in public spaces. The AUDIT-C is administered and a brief intervention based on the FRAMES model is delivered if the score indicates risky drinking. To date, 2,180 people have been screened and 52% had a positive AUDIT-C score. 78% of people with a positive score reported that this was the first time they had been asked about their alcohol use. 45% of those who received a brief intervention said they would make changes to their drinking and 11% were referred to other services. Delivering alcohol brief interventions in public spaces has the potential to identify and respond to risky drinking in older adults who may be overlooked by conventional alcohol screening programmes.
