Summary:The workshop produced a great deal of lively discussion and debate, and gave significant food for thought regarding the future directions of proficiency testing and external quality assessment. There appeared to be more widespread support for accreditation of providers here, probably as a result of greater experience of this happening in many countries. The working group, which dealt with the selection of PT and EQA schemes, highlighted demonstrable quality as being of highest importance, with cost being of significantly less importance.
