Luminescence of Eu3+ in Gd2(Zr1-yTiy)2O7:Eu3

Summary:A solid solution of Gd2(Zr1-yTiy)2O7 and (Gd0.98Eu0.02)2(Zr1-yTiy)2O7 was synthesised and the crystal structure was examined using Eu3+ luminescence as a probe. From the results it was concluded that the structure of Gd2(Zr1-yTiy)2O7 approaches an ideal or strict pyrochlore-type structure with increasing amount of Ti. The fluorescence mechanism for (Gd0.98Eu0.02)2(Zr1-yTiy)2O7 was suggested. When samples were excited by 254 nm light, Ti-O clusters absorbed the photon energy, which was transferred to the Eu3+ centres. 5 refs.
