Summary: | The USEPA reports indicate that a significant discrepancy exists between the estimates of total dioxin emission and the amount that precipitates to the earths surface. Some of this discrepancy could be the result of phototransformation processes. In this context photoprocesses occurring on micron and sub-micron aerosols are perhaps the most significant due to their potential for long range transport and increased pulmonary uptake. To date there is no data available on the transport and transformation of chlorinated dioxins by such aerosols. This paper describes a laboratory project currently underway that combines state of the art aerosol generation and characterization techniques with ultra-trace chemical analysis to investigate such transport and phototransformation kinetics and mechanisms. These studies involve the deposition of selected PCDD's on monodisperse sub-micron carbonaceous aerosols (diameter range: 0.02-1 micron) with known growth (or hydration) properties. |
