Summary: | We report a case of heterotopic pancreas of the jejunum that was found incidentally during surgery for ascending colon cancer. A 73-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for further investigation of lower abdominal pain. Gastrointestinal exploration revealed a tumor in the ascending colon. Abdominal X-ray revealed retention of a large amount of gas in the oral side of the descending colon. Colonoscopy revealed ischemic changes in the descending colon and a type 2 tumor in the ascending colon. Biopsy findings supported a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, and ileocecal resection was performed. During surgery, a second tumor, located 130cm distal to the Treitz ligament, and measuring 1 cm in diameter, was found in the jejunum. On postoperative histopathologic examination, the jejunal tumor was diagnosed as Heinrich type III heterotopic pancreas. During routine intraoperative exploration of the peritoneal cavity, we should keep in mind the possibility of the existence such heterotopia. |
