Summary:The American Academy of Pediatrics in 2018 released new guidelines recommending annual depression screening in adolescents ages 12 years and older. However, the validity of screening methods in the adolescent population requires further study. The 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) is a widely used depression-screening tool, particularly in primary care settings. We hypothesized that there are distinguishing symptoms differentiating depressed patients with positive PHQ-2 screening from those with negative PHQ-2 screening.
