Summary: | Education in a narrow sense refers to the process of receiving or imparting information or instructions in a formal fashion. The meaning of education is not confined to the three coins, that is, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic but the term education has wider connotations than its generally conceived meaning. The right to education is enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 14 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. It also finds mention in the 1960 UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in Education, 1st Protocol of ECHR and the 1981 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, in the European Convention on Human Rights, Protocol 1, Article 2 as well as several national constitutions.
The wider meaning of education has been recognised in Article 1(a) of UNESCO's 1974 According to this Article education implies: “the entire process of social life by means of which individuals and social groups learn to develop consciously within, and for the benefit of the national and international communities, the whole of their personal capabilities, attitudes, aptitudes and knowledge.”Thus, education performs the function of creating responsible social beings. Education not only helps in building the personality of an individual and checking deviation but also provides immunity against humiliation, discrimination, subjugation, exploitation and even manipulation. |
