Summary: | The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between diet habit and health condition of elderly living in Sanyo-Onoda city. This study sample included 120 elderly aged from 65 to 74 living in Sanyo-Onoda city who visited to undergo an annual medical examination. We collected data on the basic social background, the numerical values measured by body composition meter, nutritional state showed using Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form(MNA-SF),diet habit clarified by Food Frequency Questionnaire Based on Food Groups(FFQg),and cognitive function. The results of the FFQg showed that male subjects living in Sanyo-Onoda city significantly had insufficient total energy and protein intake compared with average values in Japan(P<0.01),while female subjects significantly took excessive salt as well as snacks, sugar, and oil-rich foods compared with average values in Japan(P<0.01).According to the MNA-SF categories, 36 out of 120 subjects resulted in malnutrition or risk of malnutrition, demonstrating that the male malnutrition group had significant low hand grip power than that of good nutrition group(P<0.01).We should take the differences between elderly male and female on diet habit and physical condition into consideration in health promotion initiatives. |
