Summary:This text calls into question the relationships between “madness” and “social abandonment.” It draws on the singular trajectory of Adama, a young man living with severe and chronic mental illness in Niamey (Niger). By retracing his journey, which involves both exclusion and diverse forms of support by kin members and others, this study offers a close examination of the local dynamics of (dis)engagement in long-term care. Approaching madness as ordinary and at the very heart of daily interactions allows us to consider contemporary solidarities in sub-Saharan Africa through a complex web of ties, between a moral order characterized by family solidarity, and the production of renewed concern in the face of this type of dependence.
