Summary:[...]Brandss article, Ein Baukomplex in Dura-Anastasiopolis, reminds us that early Christian architecture is more polyphonic than the texts to which we turn for elucidation. The bibliography ( pp. 32345) is divided into sections covering context and general introduction followed by the individual apologists with details of editions and studies; while far from comprehensive and somewhat eclectic surprising omissions include M. Marcovichs edition of Justins Apologiae (Berlin 1994) and M. J. Edwards and others, Apologetics in the Roman empire (Oxford 1999) the bibliography provides a very useful entrance into the subject. [...]Pouderons picture of Judaism after CE 70, and of the interaction between Jews and Christians in the period, itself feels somewhat dated; here, and more generally, the approach taken does not reect recent reevaluations of the second century and of the way the texts function and are to be read. Again, he was the rst to make reciprocity the salient attribute of the triune Godhead, so that the love between Father and Son became the foundation of human concord, and of concord between humanity and God. [...]the cultivation of a gnostic or intellectual apprehension of the Godhead entails a doctrine of man and an ethical philosophy which, by vindicating the goodness of creation, the catholicity of the Gospel and the unity of the two testaments, will disarm the self-styled Gnostics of the age and prove KINGS COLLEGE, LONDON REVIEWS 741 that gnosis is not the solvent but the preservative of a humble and biblical faith.
