Summary:People from the 5th and 6th districts of the city of São João da Barra, RJ, use water from alternative sources. This study determined the microbiological contamination of public schools and tanks in strategic locations in the communities, and related it to the physicochemical quality of the water stored according to Ordinance 518 and guidelines by the WHO. Samples were collected from 18 tanks in public schools, and one in an annex school in 18 communities for analysis of: pH, turbidity, total chlorine, free chlorine, fluoride, iron, manganese, and total coliforms and thermotolerant. All samples had at least one parameter at odds with potability standards.
