Summary:Aaron Copland was one of the greatest composers in American history. Leonard Bernstein noted that Copland was “the composer who would lead American music out of the wilderness” (Bernstein, 1970). Copland made a significant impact on the American music and cultural scene during the twentieth century that continues today. Compositions from his ballets, operas and film soundtracks continue to be performed. The physical collection at the Library of Congress was established in 2000 to celebrate the centennial of Copland’s birth. Its 400,000 items document Copland’s life and work. This smaller online collection of approximately 1,000 records derives from the larger physical collection. It includes digitized versions of Copland’s correspondence, annotated scores and various photographs that span over 70 years.
