Summary:Objectives The aim of the study was recognition of the attitudes of nursing students at Warsaw Medical University (WUM) towards issues concerning transplant medicine. Material and methods The study covered 501 students of nursing (94.4% females and 5.6% males) conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey, using the Boratyński, Mularczyk, and Danielewicz questionnaire. The study obtained the approval of the Bioethical Committee at the Warsaw Medical University (No. AKBE / 253/2019). Results Organ donation from living donors was accepted by 81.8% of the surveyed students, while organ donation and transplantation from deceased donors – by 81.6%. As many as 81.9% of the respondents admitted that they would express their consent for organ donation after death (22.0% – rather yes, 69.9% – definitely yes), and 78.8% of them accepted the possibility of organ donation after death of their loved ones (33.5% – rather yes, 44.3% – definitely yes). 52.3% of respondents had knowledge of Polish law regulating organ procurement. Conclusions Nursing students have a positive attitude towards organ transplantation; however, their support for organ procurement is a declarative idea. This evidences concerns over this problem. Nearly a half of the respondents (47.7%) were characterized by lack of knowledge of Polish law regulating organ procurement. Therefore, it is important to introduce classes devoted to the presentation of legal regulations regarding transplantation among students. The respondents who had a poor material standard significantly more rarely supported the idea of organ donation.
