Summary:This paper describes a practical method of defining the functional requirements for application programs to assist i n the operations planning that takes place at the control centre of a large electrical utility . It specifically deals with the generation aspects. rather than the transmission aspects. The operations planning activity extends to 10 days in the future. The paper explains the techniques used to identify the work processes and the data flow required to produce an operations plan for the upcoming week, the detailed day ahead plan for tomorrow's operation and the on-shift refinement and execution of the plan. Itdescribes a methodology that can be used to analyze the work processes in order to determine if applications programs should be developed to assist In better planning and dispatching of generating resources.
