Summary:Recent studies have shown that a significant fraction of cybercrimes are a direct result of user errors, which could be prevented with improved cybersecurity awareness training. We have developed a virtual cybersecurity escape room based on the three-dimensional Unity game development platform to improve cybersecurity awareness. Unlike most prior efforts, this application is based on the proven Octalysis gamification framework, which has been shown to improve user engagement and knowledge retention. Further, we integrate ethical decision making based on the IEEE Code of Ethics. Following a discussion of the application design, we present play testing results and experimentally quantify the application's performance based on eight gamification metrics.
