Summary: | Sickle cell trait is a common hematologic disorder that affects 2.5 million individuals in the United States. According to recent observation, having sickle cell trait does not exclude individuals from a potential vaso-occlusive crisis. Multiple deaths in the past 3 decades were found to be associated with sickle cell crisis. Debate remains over screening athletes for sickle cell trait prior to participation in college sports. The National Athletic Trainers' Association developed a consensus statement regarding screening for sickle cell trait and on-field management of sickle cell crisis. Early recognition and more consistent screening can hopefully lead to decreased mortality secondary to sickle cell. |
