Summary:The incidence of international mergers and acquisitions has continued to rise over the last five years. The success of these transactions is important as significant investments are made to provide stakeholder value. While mergers and acquisitions are considered financially advantageous to the companies involved they can cause considerable emotional effects in the employee emotions. Operationalization and success of mergers and acquisitions would benefit from the identification of a central cause for employers to address the emotions experienced by employees from both the acquiring and the acquired companies. The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify if situational employee-perceived ambiguity as per social information processing theory is related to employee aggression and subsequent lack of employee satisfaction in international mergers and acquisitions; and if there is a difference in aggression identified between the employees of the acquired and acquiring company during that period. Participants who were affected by M&A within the last five years were included in the study and recruited using an online service. A trend toward a correlation was observed between low hostile attribution and high employee satisfaction for both the integrity and commitment constructs but not for the dependability construct. Due to low recruitment the difference between acquired and acquiring company employees could not be made. Controlling for ambiguity may be an important factor during mergers and acquisition and proactive preparing for the receipt of what could be perceived as ambiguous situations would be advantageous for companies to consider during the merger and acquisition process.
