Summary: | The Kentish Stour Estuary has been subject to a continuous monitoring programme since June 1996. In September 1998, the exotic amphipod Chelicorophium curvispinum appeared in the upper, freshwater reaches of the estuary. At the same time, the population size of the native Corophium volutator dramatically increased in the lower part of the estuary. A third species, Corophium multisetosum, appeared near the limit of saline penetration in September 1999. Possible reasons for this multi-specific colonization, such as increases in salinity, temperature, chlorophyll a, and changes in anthropogenic impacts on the estuary, are discussed. |
