Summary: | Beginning to network with individuals who hold leadership positions within undergraduate medical education (UME) where students receive foundational knowledge, graduate medical education (GME) where graduates gain practical experience in specific specialties under the supervision of experienced physicians or with those active in medical education-based research, can guide and sponsor your academic ambitions and is a first necessary step.1 Those who hold appointments within the medical school (course directors, administrators) or within the medicine residency or cardiology fellowship (PDs, APDs, didactic directors or organisers) or even those at the highest levels (deans and vice deans of education) and outside your specialty can all be potential mentors.
