Summary: | Along with support from family, faculty and friends and individual self-support in an atmosphere of empowerment, the nursing students gain knowledge and skills to work through difficult situations turning them into opportunities for self-growth and better patient care.4 5 A descriptive correlational study by Gibson et al 6 surveyed nursing students in three sites using the Moral Distress Thermometer, the Connor-Davidson Moral Resilience Scale and the Moral Courage Scale for Physicians and found levels of moral distress. Tenets of meaning, rhythmicity and transcendence bring the nursing student one with him/herself ‘s personal meaning connecting patterns of experiences of empowerment in the classroom and beyond to patient care.6 Amsrud et al 3 also support a learning and teaching framework where a student creates an individual toolkit of learning needs based on personal reflexion and discussion participation to empower them to work through difficult experiences and progress forward. [...]of quickly applying Amsrud et al’s3 themes of demonstrating caring relationships, acknowledging uncertainty, reframing burdensome experiences and readiness to care they are building the resilience to face these trying times to deliver the best patient care. |
